Snubbed?
So, I just read an article about everyone's favorite Talk Show Host getting snubbed at an Hermes store in Paris.
Apparrantly, she showed up with a few buds at the store, a few minutes after closing, and they refused to open up for her.
Now, I can see this from a different angle than Pat O'Brian and Hairy Balls, since I work retail.
Do you know how annoying it is when people show up after hours and shop til morning come?
I do.
I know that Oprah is this super fabulo lady. I love her show. I watch her all the time. I love her. She is a great philanthopist, and absolutely amazing.
But honestly, after a long day of dealing with customers, the last thing that you want to do is open up for a few more. Customers always want to touch things, and touching leads to trying on, and trying on leads to more things to fold and hang. And even if it's Oprah, it still sucks that just when you think that you are home free, you get that little ray of hope dangled in front of you snatched away.
I would be amazed if Oprah wanted to come to the Zod and shop. I'd be fawning all over her, telling her that I love her show, but the second she or any of her buddies decided to touch, I'd probably go into Hulk mode.
Because even though it's Oprah, she'll want to touch things. And touching leads to trying on, and so on, and so on.
So maybe, just maybe, these people didn't turn her away because she was black, or famous, or annoying, or American. Maybe they turned her away because it was after closing, and just because she's a celebrity, it doesn't mean that she is beyond the rules.
As I always say, I am paid to be nice and polite and helpful from 10-9. After that, sorry, but you are SOOL, buddy. Because I'm either going to go Kung Foo on your ass, or I'm going to turn you away and say, sorry, but the store is open from 10-9. If you would like to come back tomorrow, I'd be more than happy to help you. But I have a life and a family and friends that I would like to spend time with, and if I let you in, it's only going to prolong the time that I have to spend away from them.
Oprah always says that people should be treated the same no matter what their creed, nationality, religion, marital status, gender or orientation. So maybe, just maybe, she should think about that the next time that happens. Maybe she should think about the fact that just because she's a celeb and makes billions of dollars doesn't make her any better than that girl that is getting near minimum wage to sell purses. That girl doesn't deserve to be thrown aside because Oprah decided that she was above opening and closing times.
Now, if Oprah's creed, nationality, religion, marital status, gender or orientation played a part in her not being permitted to come into the store, than ignore this blog and the crazy girl writing it. THen I am deeply sorry for her treatment. Because that is wrong. But if it's because the clerks wanted to close up for the day and get home to their lives, then Oprah needs to step back and reevaluate her priorities and think about the girl who worked hard all day helping customers who showed up at the respectful time to shop.

Loved the rant. I do empathize. The retail business is hard enough as it is. It is harder to let "showbiz peeps" realize that despite their lives being glamorous, the sales clerk's life isn't as great. How many of the clerks have second jobs? Children to pick up from daycare? Spouses they have to take care of? Family obligations to rganize and attend?
I know it's silly of me to think that everyone should not bow down to the richest woman in the world. But for once, I would like to hear her say, "My bad. We can shop on the internet for the same stuff. By the way, just because we inconvenienced you, here's a grand for your time."
Hear Hear!
I always wanted to lock the doors an hour early to get the store picked up when I worked retail. Why? Because people are pigs, and don't realize they even if they 'think' they're helping by refolding the sweater they picked up, they did it wrong, and I have to redo it anyway.
I wouldn't have let them in either, because if she wanted equal treatment, she should have shown up with everyone else--during store hours. She didn't want equal treatment. She wanted 'star' treatment.

EXACTLY!!!!
I'm always trying to sweet talk my bosses into closing early. So far, I haven't been able to crack any of them yet.
And the sweater thing, it so pisses me off when people come into the store like five minutes to close and screw up a pile that took you ten minutes to perfect in less than ten seconds. They always do that OOPS! smile and start to destroy another table you worked hard to make beautiful.
The article said that Oprah was deeply humiliated. And Pat O'Brian and Hairy Balls were talking about it just yesterday.
Great, another matter that HB has decided to stick his nose into that doesn't concern him. He should just stick to his upcoming 'mock-tuals' and leave Oprah to fight her own battles.
Even though I don't think that this should really be a battle.
