In Character v. Out of Character
So, A has been accused of having Tristan be too "In Character."
TOO IN CHARACTER?
I know. I thought it was a head scratcher too. See, I like her, had always thought of keeping the characters in character as a good thing. Apparrantly to some, this is a bad thing.
So that got me thinking. What is in character? What is out of character? And do some characters even have a solid enough characterization to make that kind of a judgement?
Take Lorelai, for example. Defined character. She's strong, independant, and completely dysfuncitonal in a functional sort of way. She is obsessed with coffee and doesn't eat very healthy, and when she's dating someone, she will not dress weather appropriate. Best friend of Sookie St. James Belleville. (Still don't know where we all got Melville from) Love of Luke Dane's life, mother to Rory. She never gives up, even if it's only for another cup of Luke's coffee, or getting her daughter into the school of her dreams, or going from a maid to owner of one of the best inns in Connecticut. She can be just about as over the top as you want her to be, because on the show, just that's the way she's portrayed. I like to write Lorelai. I like that she's loyal and true, and when she lets you into her heart, she'll love you with everything that she's got. But she's also not afraid to say what she thinks, and will tell someone, for example, Rory, when she's being an idiot and is going to ruin her life.
See? Defined character.
Now, while I was shredding old docs at work today, I got to thinking about Tristan's character. What exactly do we know about him? We don't know who he was, really, except for the ladies man of Chilton, rich, and arrogant and hot as hell. We know that he has known Paris Gellar for a long time. We know that his parents aren't that great. We don't know his parents names or what he likes to do when not at school to annoy Rory. We don't know if he's a good student, or if he's a James Bond fan or if he's read East of Eden six times or if he's never even heard of it.
Not defined character.
I don't really see where the whole in character/out of character stuff can really come into play with Tristan. He only appeared in a season and an episode, and while he had immense potential *cough* Reason why Matt Czuchry has a job *cough* he's still very malleable as a character. We don't know if he's really broody, or if he has any close friends, or if he loves eggplant and mushrooms on his pizza or if he's gotten his wisdom teeth in. So to say he's out of character is very innacurate. Because he has no super defined traits. The only super defined traits are he's rich, beautiful to look at and popular with women.
What do you think guys? Am I right? Wrong? Did I inhale too much of the liquid paper/Sharpie fumes today in the office?

Hit it in the head, lady! That's the fun thing about writing Tristan's character. We could name his parents ANYTHING (I mean, I named his dad Chandler... The only Chandler I know is the Bing kind). And the only thing other than the traits you already mentioned? He smokes to look cool. I think there was an ep (I have to watch all the Tristan eps again... like that's hard) that says he is a good student academically. The mushroom part? Not so much.
So, A's reviewer is smoking some serious ganja. Apparently, she's (or he's) tight enough with Tristan's character that the reviewer wants it changed... To the reviewer, GET A LIFE!!!!
AMEN!!!!
Like I said before, I was shredding all sorts of stuff today, and there isn't all that much mental effort that goes into that, so my mind wandered a bit. And what do I think of?
My Boys!
I have a snippett of dialogue between Finn and Mollie all worked out, and then Tristan filled my mind.
Not that I'm complaining!

Aw, I inspired a blog! I had someone else ask me to write a sequel to What Happens When, if you want to rail on them . . . :)
You did a beautiful job defining Lor's character.
And what you described about Tristan--that's why it's so fun to write him! We know next to nothing, save for he gets his kicks bugging Rory in a sexual harrassment kind of way!
I feel all special. I honestly never did think it was bad to write a believable character. I'll continue to hold to that belief.
And are you telling us you might have a new chapter of The Last soonish? *rubs hands excitedly* 'Cause if all my stupid reviews are getting your brain going, I can give you some more. . .

You are special Amy! And thank you for the compliments on my Lorelai! She's one of the favs, so I tried to do her justice.
I CAN'T believe that someone ACTUALLY ASKED for a sequel to WHW! Did they not notice that there are two of them?
S-t-u-p-i-d!
Katherine
PS- Last will come. I'm working out kinks!
WOOT!
I love the updates from everyone! I got so hard up for new stuff last night, I checked out REALLY old stuff from a writer I'd heard of but somehow missed way back when I was getting into Trory. I read Hito's Girlfriend, and Oh. My. God. You have to get it on her site, but you can find the link at her FF.net profile page. It's NC-17 and I was dying. Have you read it?
a
Not yet, but I'm going to get it now. I need me a good trory fix.
Katherine
prepare yourself.
Two words: Phone Sex.
yum!
Dirty!

You are completely right! I hate when ppl pull that crap. And what does it mean to be too in character??? I thought that was the point. I can see out of character for the regulars, but Tristan never was defined. That's why I love his character so much.
It's like they gave us an outline, but now we get to fill in the blanks. You're totally right and we should all ignore the stupid little 13 yr olds who review our stories and pretend like they know what they're talking about. alrighty then ttyl. by the by, gr8 job putting out sites on SP. hugz
